Ginzberg & Associates on Socioeconomic Status

Tested upper class boys: They showed differences in the backgrounds of upper and lower class boys. They found:

a) The life that one leads and the life that one’s family leads is certain to exercise an important influence on the determination on the type of life one chooses

b) Boys from the upper income families take it for granted, even in childhood, and more likely attend college

c) Family/ friends/ networking comes from the same occupational and social backgrounds. For upper income boys they look at professions in higher up positions and fields as obtainable. Lower income boys are more likely to have little or no contact with college graduates or with persons in the professions and may be more likely not to attend college.

d) Economic resources may be limited for low-income boys: less books, travel, theater, museums, concerts, etc

e) Upper class children have training for college in high school, lower income may not, may be more likely to go to a vocational school

d) Upper class may have more restrictions because family and society may not accept that they choose a field outside of the professional world such as a carpenter, plumber, etc.

e) Lower income children may want to be what their parents are
